Title: Preventing and Treating DVT's in Orthopedic Practice
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity participants should be able to:
- Assess the incidence of VTE in orthopedic surgery and identify patients at risk for VTE through risk stratification techniques, to prevent post-operative complications.
- Review the guidelines and standards established by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American College of Chest Physicians, Surgical Care Improvement Project and other national initiatives that define the appropriate use of and standards for antithrombotic therapies in VTE prophylaxis to improve patient health.
- Evaluate current and future therapies to assist in the treatment and prophylaxis of VTE to improve primary and secondary prevention of thromboembolic disease.
- Describe the risk of bleeding in the management of post-operative patients receiving anti-thrombotic therapies and initiate appropriate dosing of the agents to help prevent the development of bleeding complications.
