Innovations in the Treatment of the Arthritic Knee

By Robert D'Ambrosia, MD

Dear Colleague,

In either total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA), the accuracy of preoperative measurements and the identification of bony landmarks is vital to the success of the surgery. The unique anatomy of patients make this process complicated, and when minimally-invasive surgery is attempted, instrumentation can crowd the surgical field, further complicating the measuring process.

Computer-assisted navigation has been suggested as one possible solution to the problem of proper measurement and identification of local anatomy. This supplement contains articles exploring the use of computer navigation for improving implant alignment, early and mid-term reports on TKAs and THAs performed with the assistance of computer navigation, and studies comparing results achieved with computer navigation compared with more traditional methods of navigation.
